This week in OC: on Saturday, San Clemente closes Avenida Del Mar to cars and throws its 71st annual Fiesta — a street party that’s been running since 1953, back when the whole town had barely two thousand people in it. Same street, three-quarters of a century later, still free.

🔥 THE BIG THING
The best meteor shower in a decade is coming — and OC is throwing a free telescope party first.
The Perseids peak the night of Wednesday, Aug 12 into Thursday, Aug 13, and this is the year astronomers have been circling. The peak lands on a new moon, which means no moonlight washing anything out — up to 100 meteors an hour under dark skies, the best viewing conditions since the mid-2010s.
The warm-up act is this Saturday. OC Parks’ free “Starr Party” at Caspers Wilderness Park puts real telescopes, rangers, and astronomy volunteers out at California’s first designated Star Park. It’s free, parking is $5, and it’s the low-effort way to get the kids excited about a Wednesday-night meteor hunt.
Then next Wednesday: drive inland or up a canyon — Caspers, O’Neill, Santiago Canyon — let your eyes adjust for a full twenty minutes, and look northeast after 11pm. The committed stay out until 2–4am, when the rates are best.

The Perseids, kid edition. Wednesday Aug 12: blankets in the backyard, hot chocolate, and a meteor every minute or two after 11pm. This is the rare school-night exception that’s actually worth it — the viewing won’t be this good again for years.

Sancho’s Tacos — 602 PCH, Huntington Beach. Spotlight-city pick: the surf shack across from the sand that HB locals treat like a membership club. Shrimp tacos, a breakfast burrito that fixes most problems, and a patio close enough to PCH that you can smell the salt. HB led off Issue #1, so this time it’s everything that isn’t the pier:
There’s a Bavarian village hiding off Center Ave. Old World Village opened in 1978 — eight acres of cobblestone square, shops, a chapel, and a Biergarten, and here’s the part people don’t know: about forty families actually live there, above their own storefronts. Bier Fest starts there Saturday. Come Oktoberfest, it hosts the dachshund races.
The wetlands are the best free walk in the city. Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve — over 1,300 acres of restored coastal wetland across PCH from the state beach — has a flat loop trail, a footbridge over the water, and more birds than anywhere else in the county. Sunset is the cheat code.
Central Park is bigger than you think. Huntington Central Park runs about 350 acres, which makes it bigger than a lot of state parks you’ve paid to get into. Inside it: two lakes, a disc golf course, an equestrian center, a dog park, and the Shipley Nature Center.
Surf City Nights still runs every Tuesday. Main Street closes to cars — farmers market, street food, buskers, 5–9pm. The weekly thing locals forget to mention to transplants.
And the music history is real. One corner of PCH used to hold one of the most famous small rooms in America. That’s this week’s Remember When.

Market pulse (week of Aug 3, 2026): OC’s active inventory keeps setting 2026 highs — 5,192 listings at the latest count — with average days-on-market at 61. The number worth watching: pending sales dropped to 1,824 from 1,910 in a single week. More houses, fewer buyers under contract. “Concession” is still the word of the summer. → ocrealestateinc.com
The wild one: Casa Grande, San Juan Capistrano — $150,000,000. The most expensive listing in Orange County history. 42 hilltop acres above the Mission, reached through a private drive off Marbella Country Club, with 360-degree views. It comes with a working avocado and citrus farm, stabling for ten horses, and permitted plans for a 38,000-square-foot main house — which is to say, at this price you build the mansion yourself.
The fun is the math: $150 million for a house that doesn’t exist yet. It’s been listed since June 2024 and it’s still sitting there, which tells you something about the market for hilltop avocado empires. But the avocados are included.

⏪ REMEMBER WHEN…
The Golden Bear — the little club on PCH that booked everybody.
For decades, a squat brick building at 306 Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach punched impossibly above its weight. The Golden Bear started life as a café in 1923 and landed on PCH in 1929, and by the ‘60s and ‘70s it had become one of the most storied small rooms in America.
Janis Joplin played it. So did Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne, and Linda Ronstadt. A young Steve Martin did stand-up there. Buffalo Springfield played it. So did a barely-known David Crosby. Seeing a legend from thirty feet away with sand still in your shoes was, for a while, just a normal Tuesday in Huntington Beach.
Then the ‘80s happened: earthquake retrofit costs, downtown redevelopment, money trouble. The Bear played its last show in January 1986 and was demolished not long after. The corner is part of the rebuilt downtown now, and thousands of people walk past it every summer weekend with no idea the coolest room in Orange County history stood right there.
